The German Kockgeschirr or mess kit became very popular with various armed forces after the Second World War. In fact the Warsaw Pact countries adopted this kidney shaped mess kit for their own use. Soviet Russia, Poland and Hungary are three of these. But the Kockgeschirr was popular even in the west as in the case of the Bundesgrenzschuts Polizei of West Germany and The Schweizer Armee of Switzerland, albeit with some variations.

The Esercito Italiano adopted this type of mess kit in 1975, when the Gavetta M75 replaced the Gavetta Modello 1954 (M54). It consists of three parts, just like the Wermacht model, ie.: the pot (with handle), the lid/sauce pan and the plate/pan which fits inside the pot. Such mess kits were distributed to all army departments, though strangely enough most kits found on the market are quite new. This means that such kits were rarely used.

The M75 was made by at least two manufacturers OSIM and ILSA. This particular item is an ILSA mess kit.ILSA is the acronym for Industria Laminazione Stampaggio Alluminio, i.e. factory for rolling andpressing aluminium. It was established in 1946. The letters ILSA 75 (75 indicates the year of manufacture) are found on the lid of the mess kit just above the hing of the leaver/handle of the lid itself, on the pan and on one of the loops to which the handle of the pot is attached.
